Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana to Suriname

Ambassador Virjanand (Sherlock) Depoo, MBA, MSEd, has been appointed as Guyana’s Ambassador to Suriname. Ambassador Depoo brings to his new role, over thirty years of service in the public and private sectors, including in the fields of education, business, and community service.

Over the past two decades, Ambassador Depoo has been a leader in business management, development, and project management, having served as the founder, financial investor, and manager of several Guyanese based companies. Moreover, he has extensive management experience throughout the Caribbean.

While Ambassador Depoo is happy with his accomplishments in the business world, he is perhaps most proud of having served for fifteen years as an educator - teaching students at both the secondary and tertiary levels of education. During this time, he developed and taught several courses in global history, economics, and business management and organization at the University level.

Ambassador Depoo was educated in the United States of America, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Rutgers University in NJ, a Master’s in Business Administration degree from the University of Maryland, and a Master of Science in Education degree from Long Island University in NY. In addition, Ambassador Depoo went on to earn a Certificate in Leadership from the College of Saint Rose in NY.

Born in Port Mourant to Cecil and Lilowtie Depoo, Ambassador Depoo’s family emigrated to the United States in the early 1970’s, when he was a very young boy. Ambassador Depoo has been married to Sandra Depoo for over thirty-seven years and they have two adult children, Andrew and Jessica.

Ambassador Depoo plans to strengthen the existing bonds between Suriname and Guyana, along with fostering enhanced economic, social, and political ties between our two neighboring countries. Having worked with community-based organizations most of his adult life, Ambassador Depoo is committed to building strong and equitable communities, with respect for diversity and inclusion, all the while protecting the environment.
